Absolute Tips: Getting the most out of your water

Have you ever wondered where your water is coming from?

With these lovely spring showers pouring down on us, we thought it would be a great time to share a little bit about our local water supply and how to get the most out of your local water.

All of Metro Vancouver water supply flows in from three watersheds, Capilano, Seymour and Coquitlam. In Delta, we also source water from 3 Artesian wells near Watershed Park in North Delta.

There is a complex and intricate system in place for testing the quality of the water that is flowing out of your tap. They are required to test approximately 90 samples per month for bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that can cause disease. They are also checking for arsenic and pH levels. Although the city does a fantastic job of trying to keep our water safe for human consumption, the water quality can be inconsistent as it is impossible to produce perfectly pure water from your tap. The use of chlorine to disinfect the water has some unpleasant side effects, as well as potentially carcinogenic by-products. Our water also has metals and vinyl chloride that leach into the water from the distribution pipes. In combination with chlorine, these substances can produce an odour and taste that is unpleasant to some people.

What else can you do to purify your water?

Boil Your Water
On the stove or using an electric water heater, bring the water to a full boil to inactivate any Cryptosporidium parasites. This is more important for those who have a compromised immune system as this will kill any lingering bacteria, viruses, and parasites. This will not remove any added chemicals. This is also the first step for a lovely cup of tea.
